Why Fruit Is Important To Your Diet
As a parent, you may find that you have to tell your children over and over that it’s very important that they eat their fruits and vegetables. These two types of food are very important. Why? Fruits do not contain cholesterol, so they’re perfect for those who need to keep an eye on cholesterol. They’re also low in sodium and fat, plus many of them contain very few calories. However, they’re also very high in things like dietary fiber, Vitamin C, potassium, and folic acid, things that most people simply do not get enough of.
Potassium has been linked to good blood pressure, which is why many doctors suggest people eat bananas, dried apricots and peaches, prunes, cantaloupe, and honeydew melon. For fiber, which is essential but most people get very little of, it’s best to eat whole or sliced fruits. Most fruit juices do not have any fiber in them—in fact, many fruit juices are full of added sugar, so be careful. Juice doesn’t always equal the fruit it came from.
Vitamin C, of course, is one of the most important vitamins. It helps your body heal and repair tissues and wounds, plus it keeps your gums and teeth healthy. It also helps battle infections and diseases. If you seem to be sick a lot, try adding more vitamin C to your diet.
Then there’s folic acid. This acid helps the body create more red blood cells. Those who are pregnant will need to make certain they’re getting enough folic acid so that their child doesn’t develop spina bifida or neural tube defects.
