When Skin Cancer Strikes

You may develop skin cancer when your skin cells grow abnormally. However, the tumors or cancerous cells may also grow in other skin areas that are not often exposed to the sun. This type of cancer is categorized into three kinds: the melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma. Here are the common symptoms of these three types.

Skin Cancer And Its Symptoms

Symptoms for melanoma.
This can develop on any body part, but in men, it is usually on the neck, head or trunk while it can be found in the lower legs of women. Signs include a large and brownish spot with darker colored speckles, bleeding mole or one that changes in feel, color and size, small lesions with irregular borders that look red, blue, white, and blue black. It may also be a dark lesion found on the toes, fingertips, soles and palms.

Symptoms for squamous cell carcinoma. This grows in the hands, face and ears. It looks like a firm and red nodule. It can also appear like a flat lesion but its surface is crusted and scaly.

Symptoms for basal cell carcinoma. This often develops on the face and neck. It is characterized by a waxy or pearly bump. A brown scar like or a flat and flesh colored lesion may also occur.

Common Treatments Used For  Skin Cancer

Treatments depend on the type, location, depth and size of the lesions. For small cancers of the skin, no treatment may be needed except for a skin biopsy where the entire growth is removed. Here are some of the treatments that you may undergo once your doctor confirms that you do have this cancer type.

Chemotherapy. When cancer is limited to the top layer of your skin, lotions or creams with anti-cancer agents can be directly applied. When it has already spread, the treatment is systemic chemotherapy.

Radiation therapy. This is only used when the lesions cannot be surgically removed.

Laser therapy. This is used to treat superficial cancer where an intense light beam is needed to vaporize the growths.
