What Should You Eat While Battling Cancer?

Dealing with cancer is not something you should ever take lightly. It’s a battle, there’s no doubt about it, and every little thing you do can help or hurt your chances of survival. That’s why your diet is so important while you’re dealing with cancer. If your body doesn’t have the right nutrients to fuel it, you’ll find that it’s harder and harder to stay strong and handle treatments. Some of the ways cancer is treated can especially sap the body and take away your appetite, so it’s vital that you always make certain you’re getting the calories you need. If you’re uncertain what you should be eating, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Consider Your Diet ASAP

As soon as you’re diagnosed with cancer, you should talk to your doctor or a nutritionist about what you should be eating. Some foods are going to be much better for you than others, especially during those days when you don’t really want to eat. You may have to force yourself to put food in your mouth, so you want make sure you’re eating foods that are really going to help. Since you’re likely to be weak and tired, try focusing on foods that don’t take a lot to prepare. Nuts are a good source of protein, and you can find little yogurt and applesauce cups at most supermarkets. Having someone put together small containers of snacks such as cut vegetables can be helpful, too, and can give those who want to help a task. They could also make some of your favorite meals and freeze them so all you have to do is pop them in the microwave.

While You’re Undergoing Treatment

If you end up going through chemotherapy, you’re going to have to keep your strength up. If you’re having a good day and feel like eating a lot, you want to make sure you’re getting a good amount of calories and protein. In fact, your doctor may encourage you to eat as many calories as you want to help counterbalance the bad days, but make certain they’re good calories. Chicken, fish, lean meat, eggs, nuts, cheese, beans, yogurt, and milk are all good foods you need to try to eat a good amount of. Also do your best to get two to three cups of vegetables and fruits in every day, especially the dark green vegetables and fruits such as grapefruit and oranges.

Don’t forget to drink a lot of water, too. You will need to stay hydrated. Fresh juices are also good, especially orange juice for that extra vitamin C. If you find that you can’t really keep down food or have no interest in eating, try drinking meal replacement beverages. You’ll find some that contain a good amount of calories and other things the body needs.

Also remember that you don’t have to eat three traditional meals during the day. It’s find to eat a lot of smaller meals throughout the day if that helps.
