What Is Chromium?
Have you heard of chromium? You may not have, but it’s something that you need to ingest every day in order to stay healthy. Chromium is an essential mineral that the body needs to function. While we don’t need a lot of it, when do need it to make use of the energy stored within our bodies. Chromium moves glucose through the bloodstream and into the body’s cells. The cells then use this glucose to transform carbs, fat, and protein into energy. It can help decrease cholesterol, stabilize blood sugar levels, and may help protect the eyes and bones.
Chromium comes from several different sources, including cheese, spices, molasses, potatoes, cereal, fresh vegetables and fruits, and whole-grain breads. Chromium can also be found in common tap water, and you can actually increase the amount of chromium in your foods by preparing it in a stainless-steel pain or pot.
While the body doesn’t need a lot of chromium, it is possible to be deficient in it. Those who are most at risk of becoming chromium deficiency include the elderly and people who are struggling with diabetes. You can also actually ingest too much chromium. If you do, you may end up with some stomach issues and could become hypoglycemic. A diet very high in chromium can also damage the nerves, kidneys, and liver. However, this is fairly rare—a person would have to be eating foods very high in chromium and taking a large amount of chromium supplements for a good amount of time before exhibiting any of these symptoms.
