The Fight Against Heart Disease
Did you know that more people in the U.S. die from heart disease than from any other illness? That’s why talk about heart health is so prevalent and so important. Heart disease includes things like heart attack, coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, and more. Basically, any type of issue that’s caused by plaque building up within arteries can be considered a type of heart disease. The lack of blood flow is what causes all of the issues, and often, surgery is the only option. It involves actually going into the arteries and removing plaque via bypass, stenting, or angioplasty. Heart disease can also include things like issues with the valves or abnormal rhythms.
Prevention is Key
So how do you battle heart disease? The key is prevention. If you have a history of heart disease, or if your doctor has said that it looks like you may be at risk, you should take precautions now rather than wait until an issue comes up. If you wait too long or ignore these warnings, it may be too late to do anything about heart disease by the time it becomes really serious.
Here are a few things you can do to help reduce your risk.
Exercise
As with almost all diseases and other issues, being physically active can do a lot. Getting up and moving around can strengthen your heart, lower your cholesterol and blood pressure, and help you keep your weight at a healthy level. Even if you can’t exercise every day, try doing something that increases your activity. Walk around your office a little bit, do some housework, or walk a lap around the grocery store before you start shopping. Anything you can do to get moving will help keep your heart healthy.
Better Foods
Another thing to do is to eat better. While changing your entire diet all at once can be difficult, it’s not as hard if you start slowly. First, cut out foods that are high in trans fats or in saturated fats. This will greatly help decrease your risk of heart disease. Then you can work to cut out sodium and add in healthier foods. You can talk to your doctor or to a nutritionist about how you can eat better and what foods are good for your cardiovascular system.
You may also want to start taking an acai berry supplement. Research has shown that a supplement such as the acai berry may be able to provide you with a number of benefits.
