Superfoods vs. The Flu
More and more we are beginning to see how foods, particularly superfoods, can affect our bodies and our health. With the flu season fast approaching, now is the time to make changes to your diet to include foods that will help give you more energy and boost your immune system.
A well balanced diet should consist of fruits and vegetables, low-fat proteins and complex carbohydrates. To help boost your immune system, try to include fruits such as oranges into your diet as they are very high in Vitamin C. Even higher in Vitamin C than an orange however are black currants. Eating these a few times a week should help boost your immune system and keep it high and functioning as well as preventing infection.
Other nutrients that help keep the immune system strong are selenium and zinc. These are found in high levels in pork however due to the fat and salt content found in most pork, you may want to limit your intake of this food to only once or twice a week. Pork is also a great source of Vitamin B.
Vegetables such as broccoli and brussel sprouts are great to have in your meal plans as they are high in Vitamin C and fibre and contain folate. These vegetables also contain anti-carcinogenics which are great cancer-fighting properties. Potatoes’ is another vegetable that is great for your health as they contain high levels of potassium and fiber. As the skin contains the most fiber, try and eat the potato with the skin on by simply cleaning it off before cooking. Roasting potatoes is a great option if you don’t like the taste of the skin. If you are more of a pasta eater than a potato eater, try going for a whole wheat pasta rather than a white pasta. This type of pasta is rich is niacin, fiber and even iron, all very important nutrients for the body.
When you feel like a snack, instead of grabbing an empty carb like chips or chocolate bars, try eating some probiotic yogurt. The live cultures have a positive effect on your GI tract and help keep your body regular. With a regular GI tract, your body will be expelling germs from the body and at the same time, keeping you rid of the flu.
You may also want to start taking an acai berry supplement. Research has shown that a supplement such as the acai berry may be able to provide you with a number of benefits.
