Managing Diabetes with Diet

People with diabetes, especially when they’re first diagnosed, may try to control it with diet. Those who find the perfect diet may never have to turn to medication, but it can be hard to figure out what’s safe to eat and what’s not. This is because, to an extent, everyone’s body reacts differently to foods. What really spikes one person’s blood sugar may not have as large an impact on another person, especially if they eat that food with a good source of protein.

However, there is one thing that is most likely true: you’re going to have to change your diet in some way. Many people find that they have to reduce the number of carbs that they eat, which means fewer breads, starches, and sweets. However, people do have to be very careful—you can’t cut out all carbs from your diet because the body needs them to function.

The trick is identifying the bad carbs. Anything with refined carbohydrates should be avoided. That includes white bread, candy, pasta, rice, and most desserts and snack foods. Good carbs are whole grains and are rich in fiber.

While diabetics will also have to cut back on their sugar intake, it’s important to remember that you don’t have to give up all cookies, cakes, and other desserts. Instead, simply eat them in moderation. Have one small piece of cake instead of three large ones.

Remember that while all sugars will make your blood sugar rise, even natural sugars, there are some foods with sugars that are good for you.

Another important factor in your diet is what you eat together. Eating a meal with some carbs can be fine if you balance those carbs with proteins. This can help the body absorb the carbs more slowly so your blood sugar doesn’t spike.

You may also want to start taking an acai berry supplement. Research has shown that a supplement such as the acai berry may be able to provide you with a number of benefits.
