Keeping Your Body Strong
One of the most important functions of the body is the immune system. Without it, the body falls prey to all sorts of diseases. Unfortunately, there are many times when the immune system becomes compromised. When this occurs, you’ll get sick more often and may have a much worse time dealing with the illness. Your symptoms may be worse or last longer. In some extreme cases, those with a compromised immune system can’t fight off the simplest of diseases and end up dying. That’s why it’s vital to have a strong immune system—it can fight off just about anything! It will fight these illnesses off, and while you might feel sick, you’ll recover much more quickly and with fewer symptoms than you would if your immune system were not as good.
So what can you do if you find your immune system suffering? There are a few different ways you can strengthen it. The first thing to do is to stop doing anything that damages the immune system. This includes smoking, drugs, and drinking excessive amounts of alcohol. All of these things put stress on the body in multiple ways. Also get up off the couch and exercise regularly. Be sure to get a good amount of sleep, too. Sleep gives the immune system time to rally against the invading viruses or bacteria.
There are a number of different vitamins and minerals that may help boost the immune system. Vitamins A, B2, B6, C, D, and E have all been linked to the immune system in some way. Zinc helps the immune system function correctly, but be careful not to take too much—an over-abundance of zinc in the body can actually hurt the immune system.
Vitamin C is a good supplement to take if your immune system has been compromised or when recovering from a long illness. Vitamin C helps the body fight off common diseases like the cold or the flu. This extra boost can be vital to avoiding a chain reaction of illnesses, which often happens when you’re recovering from something major.
A number of Vitamins in the B family can help give you a boost of energy. In fact, many of those fast-acting energy drinks you see advertised on TV are nothing but a lot of B vitamins, caffeine, and sugar. Leave out the caffeine and sugar—they’ll just make you crash later—and take some B6 and B12. You’ll get a rush of energy without the downsides.
Getting up and being active isn’t really a supplement, but it’s something you can do to help get yourself slowly back on your feet. It will be slow going and may even hurt at first, but any doctor will tell you that you’ve got to be active. You don’t want to go overboard, of course, but you should push yourself just a bit each day. Try to walk just a little bit farther or a little longer than the day before.
