Handling Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is exactly what it sounds like: having pain that continues to recur. This pain can be everything from a dull ache to a major lighting strike of pain that makes you double over. Sharp, throbbing, sudden, piercing…no matter what type of pain it is, it’s not fun.

What is Pain?

Pain is the body’s way of saying that something is very wrong. Sometimes it indicates that we have been injured in some way, while other types of pain signal that something is wrong with the body. Pain in any form should never be ignored—it’s the body’s way of saying that something isn’t right. Any time you experience unknown pain that won’t go away, you need to see a doctor or take steps to handle it. Ignoring it or using over-the-counter medication for weeks on end is not a good solution.

Two Types of Pain

There are two types of pain: acute and chronic. Acute pain comes from injury and usually happens right away. It’s the type of pain that comes from stepping on something sharp or being hit in the head. Acute pain normally is limited, and once it’s gone, it’s usually gone for good.

Chronic pain, on the other hand, doesn’t go away. It returns again and again, and most doctors see it as a representation of a disease or illness. Because you know this pain is going to return, chronic pain is often accompanied by emotional and psychological problems that can make the pain much worse. Chronic pain can be very difficult or even impossible to treat. It’s possible to have multiple problems that lead to chronic pain, too.

What Causes Chronic Pain?

There are many different things that can cause chronic pain. The following list contains some of these issues, but it is by no means complete.

• Arthritis – this is one of the most common causes of chronic pain. This inflammatory disease affects the joints and can be found throughout the body.
• Back pain – this is another very common chronic pain issue. Everything from sciatica to spinal issues to even excessive exercise can cause back pain.
• Burns – being burned can lead to chronic pain, especially if it’s a serious third-degree burn.
• Migraines – this horrible headache can include more than just pain; it may also be accompanied by sensitivity to light or sound, nausea, and more.
• Neuropathy – this type of chronic pain is the result of the nervous system being damaged in some way. It feels like burning or shocks of pain in the body and can affect many different areas.
• Shingles and other, similar skin problems are also often accompanied by pain. Many types of rashes hurt, especially if you scratch at them.

How Chronic Pain is Treated

There really is no way to cure chronic pain. Normally, doctors approach it in two ways: the first is to treat the condition that is the source of the pain, and the second is to use pain medication to manage it. In some cases, pain management is the only solution.
