Do You Drink Too Much Coffee?

Many people love a good cup of coffee. Even those who don’t particularly like the taste end up drinking a lot of coffee just to get going in the morning. In addition to morning coffee, many people spend a lot of money on fancy coffee drinks. These drinks include a large amount of caffeine, which can give you a nice boost of energy every morning. However, drinking coffee also has some major side effects. If you drink a lot of it, you may have to deal with some of these problems.

The Problems of Coffee

First, coffee can stimulate the production of hydrochloric acid if you drink it on an empty stomach. This acid is how the body digests solid food. If the body starts making this acid when you drink coffee, it may not make as much when you actually eat food. This can make it difficult to digest a large meal, which in turn can lead to bloating, irritable bowels, and even major issues like colon cancer.

A number of the other compounds found in coffee can irritate the lining of the stomach and of the small intestines. This can complicate issues such as ulcers, IBS, Crohn’s disease, and gastritis, so those who are dealing with these illnesses should definitely avoid coffee. There’s even some studies that suggest too much coffee can cause these problems.

It Leads to Mineral Deficiency

Drinking a lot of coffee can also make it difficult for the body to absorb the necessary minerals it needs to function. By the end of the day, you’ve had four or five cups of coffee or several sodas. You’ll then find yourself in one of two situations: either you experience another crash and fall asleep early instead of spending time with your family, or you have one more cup and find yourself still awake at two in the morning. That leads to needing yet more coffee the next day. This is definitely too much coffee!

Do your best to stick to no more than one cup of coffee in the morning, but if it’s at all possible, don’t even do that. Instead, try green tea or a natural energy booster.
