Diabetics Eating Right
Eating right is a major part of any diabetic’s life. Some people, though, think that the diagnosis means that they will never be able to eat anything that they love again. It’s nothing but salads, some meat, and fruits, right? Not exactly. In fact, there are a lot of thing that a diabetic can still eat. While many people will need to change some aspects of their diets, they don’t have to completely cut out any type of food. In fact, it’s possible to completely enjoy life to the fullest and eat all of your favorite meals!
Cutting Out Carbs
While it’s true that you do need to cut back on sugars and carbs, there’s no way you can completely cut either out of your diet. Sugars are naturally found in many foods, including most fruits. The body needs carbohydrates to provide it with energy. So what’s the truth? You can eat whatever you want, but you need to do so in moderation. Eat potatoes, pasta, or even cookies, but only eat small servings and don’t eat them all at once. Have one carb per meal, and don’t get seconds. That’s fine!
All Carbs are Bad and Should be Eaten in Small Amounts/Not at All
Likewise, some people lump all carbs into the same category and consider them all harmful. Whole grain carbs are actually good for you because they contain a lot of fiber and they digest more slowly. This means that they don’t make your blood sugar spike. The carbs you want to cut down on are the refined carbs—white bread, candy, rice, pasta, snack foods, and soda. You can still have them as a treat every now and then, but try to go for whole grain whenever you can.
Amp up the Protein
For years, people thought that diabetics needed to eat a lot of protein. However, studies now show that eating a lot of animal protein can actually cause the body to become more insulin resistant. It can also affect the kidneys. Instead of focusing on eating a lot of protein, look at eating good fats and whole grains. Remember, balance is everything.
Don’t eat Any Sugars
As mentioned above, you don’t have to cut out all sugar. In fact, you simply can’t cut out all sugar and all carbs. What you can do is make dessert a special treat every now and then. Also don’t forget that there are other ways you can change your life that will help keep your blood sugar under control. Exercise does wonders for it, and if you exercise a good amount, you’ll see that eating a sugary treat doesn’t affect your blood sugar quite as much. You can also take supplements. They can help with your metabolism and keep your body in balance. As long as you look for all natural supplements with no added sugar, you’ll be okay.
