Diabetic Neuropathy is a type of nerve pain that many people with diabetes suffer from. However, neuropathy isn’t limited to just those with diabetes—some medications and other nerve issues can also cause it. It can take several forms—shooting pains down the legs or in the hands, sudden electrical shocks, or a cold, freezing sensation. Often neuropathy comes and goes, with some days being worse than others.

However, there are some natural ways of treating neuropathy. The first thing to do is work on controlling the cause of the neuropathy. Walking actually helps with neuropathy, even though it may hurt while you’re doing it. Walking gets more blood flowing to the legs and feet, which helps nourish the nerves and repair the damage done to them. In fact, walking regularly may even prevent neuropathy in the first place, which is why those diagnosed as pre-diabetic are encouraged to walk and exercise a lot.
Taking a Vitamin B supplement can also help. That’s because the B vitamins, especially vitamin B-6, niacin, and riboflavin, are helpful. B-6 is very good for nerve health, while niacin and riboflavin can help with metabolism and controlling diabetes. Of course, vitamin B has many other benefits, too, including giving you more energy.
These vitamins come from a number of different types of foods, including potatoes, whole grains, chili peppers, beans, bananas, lentils, and molasses. Most people eat enough of these foods to get all or at least most of the Vitamin B that their body needs. However, there are some diets that are deficient in Vitamin B, and not everyone gets their daily recommended amount of these vitamins. Most people don’t get enough B6, B12, or folic acid/B9. These vitamins come from animal protein, whole grains, and dark green vegetables. Some people just don’t eat enough of these types of foods. Finally, some people control the pain of neuropathy by using capsaicin. This is the ingredient in chili peppers that makes them so hot. When a capsaicin cream is rubbed into the areas affected by nerve pain on a regular basis, many people have reported a sharp decrease in pain.
