Dealing With Migraines

A migraine is a horrible type of headache that is somewhat like a sinus headache or a tension headache, but unlike headaches, migraines are often hereditary and can come on very frequently. They’re often also accompanied by visual or audible hallucinations, a sensitivity to light, nausea, or vomiting. It can be difficult to deal with a migraine, especially since a lot of medications don’t always work for everyone.

Symptoms

One problem with migraines is that there are a number of symptoms, and not everyone will have all of them at once. Some people may never experience some of these symptoms, while others may have them all the time. Here are some of the most common symptoms you may experience if you have a migraine.

Visual auras – you may start to see weird, flashing colors or lights when you have a migraine. Others see patterns. Some people actually lose vision in an eye or have spots that go totally black. This first time this happens, you may panic, but don’t worry—your vision will return. You may also become very sensitive to light and need to be in a dark place.

Sensitivity to sound – when your migraine starts, you may find that any tiny little noise echoes through your head. In this case, do what you can to find a quiet space to rest.

Prodrome – you can find that your mood suddenly changes right before a migraine hits. You might suddenly feel tired, depressed, angry, or even very hyper. You might also experience a shift in smell or taste. Something might smell weird to you when it usually smells good, for example. Once you understand what your warning signs are, you can use them to get to a place where you can deal with the migraine.

Headache – most people think of migraines as major headaches, but it’s actually possible to have a migraine with no or very little headache. The presence or lack of a headache doesn’t necessarily mean you have or don’t have a migraine.

Nausea – you may find that you vomit or feel like you may vomit. Food may smell horrible to you, too.

Treatment

Normally, your migraine will go away with rest. The longest most migraines last is about three days, and while that sounds like a long time and won’t be much fun, it’s often the best cure. Migraines usually aren’t as bad if you can avoid light and sound, especially if you experience a heightened sensitivity to either.

You can take over the counter pain medication for migraines, but for most people, they don’t do much good. Taking medication for nausea can help if you feel nauseous, but again, it may not work for everyone.

There are some medications that have been developed for migraines, and they are usually prescription drugs. You can talk to a doctor about taking these medications. They may come in the form of nasal spray, skin patches, or even injections. Some medications can be taken regularly to prevent migraines. These are especially good for those who suffer frequently. These medications were often developed to treat other issues, including high blood pressure and depression, but they also work for migraines.

You may also want to start taking an acai berry supplement. Research has shown that a supplement such as the acai berry may be able to provide you with a number of benefits.
