Common Types Of Cysts

Cysts are typically types of sacs that can be found in different areas of the body. They can be serious, and dealing with them is often a must. Two of the most common types of cysts are breast cysts nad liver cysts.

Breast Cysts

Breast cysts may appear alone, or you may have multiple cysts appear at once. Often, women between 35 and 50 find these cysts, although women younger or older can also develop them. Typically, cysts vanish after a woman goes through menopause, especially if they do not get on any type of hormone therapy. While cysts may be something that have to be dealt with immediately, others are actually fairly benign and may be left until they vanish on their own.

There are a few different symptoms that come with breast cysts. When found, the cyst will feel like a round or oval lump in the breast. They are usually fairly smooth and can be moved around easily. If the bump has distinct edges, that’s a good sign that it is benign and can be left to dissipate on its own after menopause. It’s possible that the cyst will decrease in size after a while, and it’s also possible that a cyst in one breast will actually affect both. The overall size of your breasts may increase or decrease near your period, plus both breasts may become more tender.

It’s important to realize that normal breast tissue does at times feel lumpy, especially before menstruating. However, when lumps fail to disappear after menstruating, women are encouraged to visit their doctor to have them examined. It’s also a good idea to visit the doctor if the lumps noticeably grow or change in any way.

Liver Cysts

No one is exactly sure what causes some liver cysts. However, cysts do often grow to the point where they cause discomfort or outright pain that’s felt on the upper right side of the abdomen. Liver cysts are not dangerous, just painful, but if the cyst gets infected or begins to obstruct the bile ducts, they become very serious. They may also cause the liver to enlarge, which can cause other problems.

There are different types of liver cysts, and the causes of some of them are known. Choledochal cysts, for example, are present at birth. These are congenital abnormalities that appear in the bile duct. Caroli’s disease is another issue that can cause recurring inflammation of the bile ducts. This disease can also be caused by dilation of the intrahepatic bile duct or by kidney stone formation. Finally, congenital hepatic fibrosis, which is a very rare hereditary disorder, actually results in scar tissue forming within the liver or the bile ducts forming in an irregular shape.

There are other causes of liver cysts that are not related to these three, but doctors are not yet certain what they are.
