Can You Take Too Many Supplements?
If you’re taking a daily multivitamin, some individual supplements like a B complex and zinc, and then decide to add in something like an acai berry supplement, which research has shown may be able to provide you with a number of benefits. But you may wonder if you’re taking too many supplements. Is there such a thing? It really depends on what you’re taking.
The body is really only equipped to deal with a certain amount of each vitamin and mineral. If more than that amount is ingested, the body normally simply passes it out. This is generally done through urine, and a change in the color of your urine often occurs. For example, if you ingest more Vitamin B than your body can handle, you’ll notice that your urine is suddenly bright yellow. It won’t stay that color for very long—once the excess Vitamin B is out of your system, it will return to its usual color.
But if a very large dose of certain vitamins get into your system all at once, you may experience an overdose. For example, Vitamin A toxicity, referred to as Hypervitaminoxis A, occurs when a large amount of Vitamin A is introduced into the body. For men and women above age 19, this is more than 3,000 IU a day. This can lead to blurred vision, decreased appetite, drowsiness, dizziness, headache, nausea, and more. If you continue to have too much Vitamin A in your system, you may even start to experience hair loss, bone swelling, and peeling of the skin.
That’s why you’ll want to make certain you’re not overdoing it with supplements. If you’re taking a daily multivitamin and something like our acai berry capsules, you may want to drop that Vitamin A supplement. Remember you’re getting these vitamins and minerals from food, too, so you have to factor that in.
